2. What's New

Legend:

[+] new feature

[-] bug resolved

[*] bug resolved and functionality improved

Parallels Plesk Panel 11.0

  1. [+]  Smooth cloning in virtual environments. Administrators can seamlessly scale their infrastructure by copying the same virtual machine with Panel as many times as they need in their virtual environments. Previously, this was problematic because Panel copies and the original had the same configuration, for example, the same IP address pool. Starting such a copy on a machine with a different IP address could make the Panel inoperable because its services were bound to the original IP address.

Now the administrators can use special utilities to prepare Panel for safe cloning in virtual environments (GoDaddy cloud, Amazon cloud, KVM, Xen, and so on). Learn more about Panel cloning on Windows.

  2. [+]  Modern Look & Feel. The Panel 11 user interface features an updated, modern look that is organized and functions identically to the Panel 10 user interface, so hosters and end-users will have no trouble adapting. If the administrators decide to change the theme later, they can do it in Tools & Settings > Panel Branding. Read more about changing branding and themes.

  3. [+]  Better Security. Panel 11 has put significant efforts into improving security. Hosters and website owners concerned about security should upgrade to Panel 11 for enhanced protection. Among other improvements, your Panel users can find the following:

  4. [+]  Software Development Kit for writing extensions. Adding new functionality to Panel has never been so clear. Use the new SDK (the replacement of former Modules API) to learn how to extend Panel to meet your unique needs.

  5. [+] (Only for Windows) Instant configuration of WebMatrix. If a customer decides to use Microsoft WebMatrix for website development, they can instantly set up web publishing of code from their local environment directly to their customer account. For this, they should just download an XML file with settings and import it to WebMatrix. The download link is available in Websites & Domains > Advanced Operations > Web Deploy Publishing Settings.

The settings are only available if Web Deploy is installed on the server and is running.

Learn more about the WebMatrix support.

  6. [+] (Only for Windows) One-click removal of Panel. Administrators can remove Panel as any other program using the standard tools, namely, from Control Panel & Programs. For the complete instruction on how to remove programs in Microsoft Windows, read this article.

  7. [+] (Only for Windows) Removal of Panel components. If administrators no longer need a certain Panel component, they can remove it from Panel, in Tools & Settings > Updates and Upgrades > Add/Remove Components or by clicking the Add or Remove Components link on the dashboard. Learn more about managing Panel components.

  8. [+]  Enable more APS applications with better APS 1.2 compliance. Independent software vendors (ISVs) can rely on a smoother end-to-end experience for application deployment with the following new supported aspects:

  9. [+]  Power User view by default. The majority of our customers install Panel for corporate and business use, so we have rearranged the list of options in the view selector to follow this trend. The view selector is the tool that helps you select the most convenient Panel view on the first Panel run.

  10. [+]  Activate Panel by an activation code. Administrators can activate Panel either by uploading an XML key as they did before or by using the new way - providing an activation key. The new option is available in Tools & Settings > License Management > Install Key. Learn more about Panel licensing.

  11. [+]  Transparent activation of commercial APS apps. Now it is possible to purchase a Panel license in a bundle with APS app licenses. When administrators activate Panel using such combined keys and then install the corresponding commercial apps, the system transparently activates the apps without any actions from the administrator. The pool of used and unused app license keys is available in Tools & Settings > License Management > Additional License Keys. Learn more about license bundles.

  12. [+]  (Only for Windows) Install Web Deploy as a component. Administrators can install Web Deploy during the Parallels Panel installation. This automates the component installation process and reduces the number of steps administrators should perform to set up Web Deploy. Read more about installing Web Deploy.

  13. [+]  We added support for the Korean language.

  14. [*]  The PHP version is updated to 5.3.13.

  15. [*]  The Atmail version is updated to 1.0.5.

  16. [*]  New documentation structure. Panel documentation was reorganized to ease its use through shortening the list of documents and clearly shaping each document for specific audiences. For example, the Administrator's Guide now includes the Control Panel User's Guide, so administrators have the complete description of the Panel GUI in one document.

  17. [*]  Integration with the Parallels Panel page on Facebook. Administrators can Like the Parallels Panel page on Facebook from within the control panel itself. This feature can be hidden by modifying the panel.ini file. Learn more about managing the button visibility.

  18. [*]  Product rating widget. Administrators can rate Parallels Panel and provide their feedback after one month since their first login. This feature can be hidden by modifying the panel.ini file. Learn more about managing the widget visibility.

  19. [*]  Administrators can hide all promos in Panel altogether (including promos on the Mail tab). Learn how to hide the promos here.

  20. [*]  (Only for Windows) Links to Parallels Panel in WebMatrix. If a customer decides to use WebMatrix to write code and publish it to their customer account, they should provide WebMatrix with publishing settings. The tool uses these settings to connect to the customer account. Customers can provide the publishing settings either manually or by importing their profile to WebMatrix. Parallels Panel automatically generates such profile files for each customer account. If a customer prefers to import the profile, WebMatrix will additionally show the link in various places of the customer's control panel. This provides customers with an easy way to launch Parallels Panel in a browser. Read more about configuring web publishing with WebMatrix.

  21. [*]  (Only for Windows) Include passwords in the files that keep WebMatrix publishing settings. To quickly connect WebMatrix to a customer account, Panel generates an XML file called profile. Customers can import the profile to WebMatrix instead of manually entering connection settings. Such files contain the password to a customer account. Administrators may wish to improve the security of the system and prevent stealing the passwords by instructing Parallels Panel to exclude the passwords from the XML files. The customers will then have to enter the passwords directly in WebMatrix. Read how to exclude the passwords from the profiles.

  22. [*]  (Only for Windows) Extended PVC template is not supported. We discontinued the support for Parallels Panel for Windows Extended PVC template ("PanelExt").

  23. [*]  Panel users can see additional troubleshooting information and proposed solutions when backing up their data.

  24. [*]  Customers can see and install only APS applications that meet all the hosting requirements. For example, an app is displayed in the Applications list if a customer has all necessary web server modules and scripting support.

  25. [*]  Customers were informed that their password was not strong enough if they used the £ symbol in their passwords.

  26. [*]  Changes in service plans now apply to existing subscriptions faster than before.

  27. [*]  Panel shows a hint about the maximum size of a backup file that it can process.

  28. [*]  Panel security is improved by excluding a vulnerable component Stunnel.

  29. [*]  Panel users can apply the {WEBSPACEROOT} placeholder in custom PHP settings.

  30. [*]  Administrators get more troubleshooting information when calling command-line utilities.

  31. [*]  For security considerations, we removed the ability of administrators to log in to Panel through the Virtuozzo Power Panel. It was possible by entering the admin username and the Panel administrator's password if the offline management was enabled in the container. Plesk Panel remains available at https://:8443 and Panel administrator's credentials while the Virtuozzo Power Panel is available at https://:4643 and the system administrator's credentials. Additionally, Panel no longer creates the system user admin in the Administrators group. After upgrading to Panel 11.0, this user is also removed.

  32. [*]  Customers can change passwords of their users' mailboxes in the Control Panel.

  33. [*]  Administrators can set a custom name for an APS application's database during the application installation.

  34. [*]  Panel users can set the {WEBSPACEROOT}/:{TMP}/ value to the open_basedir PHP parameter. This eliminates the problem when scripts that require files located outside the site's root directory (additional libraries, configuration files, and so on) do not work. The open-basedir parameter in the server-wide PHP settings now uses this value by default.

    Before Now
Users can set one of the following predefined values to open_basedir:
    • Default (the defaut value in server-wide php.ini is {DOCROOT}/:/tmp/)
    • {DOCROOT}/:/tmp/
Users can set one of the following predefined values to open_basedir:
    • Default* (the defaut value in server-wide php.ini is {WEBSPACEROOT}/:{TMP}/)
    • {DOCROOT}/:/{TMP}/ - limits scripts to open files only in the root directory of a website.
    • {WEBSPACEROOT}/:{TMP}/ - limits scripts to open files only in the root directory of a webspace. (Recommended)
    • None - removes any restrictions. (Not recommended as potentially insecure)
    * Note that during an upgrade to Panel 11, default values in server-wide php.ini are automatically updated. Additional directives remain intact.
  35. [*]  By default, administrators perform all hosting operations directly in the Server Administration Panel.

    Before Now
If Service provider view was selected during Panel installation, the Open hosting operations in Server Administration Panel option is turned off in Tools & Settings > Interface Management.
If the administrator performs an upgrade from Panel version earlier than 10.0, the option is automatically turned on.
If Service provider view was selected during Panel installation, the Open hosting operations in Server Administration Panel option is turned on.
If the administrator performs an upgrade from Panel version earlier than 10.0, the option is automatically turned on.
  36. [*]  Panel preserves user-defined list sorting in new user sessions.

    Before Now
If a user applies some custom sorting to any list in Panel, this sorting will work only in the current user session. Panel will use the default list sorting in the next user session. If a user applies some custom sorting to any list in Panel, this sorting will work not only in the current user session but in all following sessions.
  37. [*]  If the administrator changes hosting settings of a certain website, Panel will apply the changes in the background without suspending the site.

    Before Now
When the administrator changes hosting settings of a certain website (for example, enables the support for ASP.NET), Panel suspends the site until all changes are not applied in IIS. For large sites, this may lead to significant site downtime. When the administrator changes hosting settings of a certain website, Panel does not suspend the site. Downtime is insignificant even for large sites.
  38. [*]  The default validity period of all newly created service plans is now Unlimited.

    Before Now
When the administrator creates a service plan, plan's validity period is set to 1 Year by default. When the administrator creates a service plan, plan's validity period is set to Unlimited by default.
